The value of raw materials in the global e-waste generated in 2019 is equal to approximately $57 billion USD.

Importance of E-Waste Recycling

Globally E-waste is generated to an extent of 56 million tons. The fate of 82.6% (44.3 Mt) of e-waste generated in 2019 is uncertain, and its whereabouts and the environmental impact varies across the different regions. India is the third largest producer of E-Waste. E-waste Production in India is expected to increase in future years.

India at present recycles only 5% of its total generated E-waste. As per NREP, 2019, E-waste recycling can contribute significantly to country’s future demand for minerals requirement towards Electronics and semi-conductor’s manufacturing.

When electronic waste is dumped into landfills, toxic materials can seep into the soil and groundwater, affecting not only our health, but also land and sea animals. The people most in danger of this are people in developing countries where most of the electronic waste is dumped. Occupational hazards of E-waste are known to cause genetic dis-orders and loss of memory, characterized by cardio-vascular changes and loss of Blood coagulation.
